Seagate 4-bay NAS Review

PCworld has a review of the Seagate 4-Bay NAS 16TB NAS (Model STCU16000100). This is a 4-bay NAS with four 4 GB seagate drives installed. The NAS is based on a dual-core Intel Atom C2338 CPU which provides very good performance.

Seagate has a version of RAID - "SimplyRAID" that provides the ability to mix and max drive sizes.

Performance was good:
Seagate’s 4-bay NAS with a dual-core Intel Atom C2338 CPU proved to be a good performer. It wrote our 10GB mix of files and folders at

Synology and QNAP Recommended...Again

I found a forum thread at hardforum.com started by someone who was looking for a NAS suggestion. He didn't want to build a dedicated box (or reuse one) but wanted recommendations for a home NAS:
I would prefer a dedicated NAS unit over a re-purposed windows/linux box just from the standpoint of better integration of parts, smaller footprint/power requirements, and ease of maintenance so I'm wondering what the consensus is for finding something decent in the $500-$600 range with 4 bays and

FreeNAS vs NAS4Free

A while back (I missed it at the time) Arstechnica had a "shootout" between two of the free NAS distributions - FreeNAS and NAS4Free. Both are (as stated) free and ready to run the ZFS advanced file system for rock solid data reliability.

FreeNAS is a rewrite of the original FreeNAS code, and NAS4Free is a derivative from the original code. So, both had the same origin, but have moved in radically different directions. Both are full featured NAS distributions capable of being run from a

FreeNAS vs Dedicated NAS Hardware

There is an interesting thread over at Filesharingtalk.com about using a NAS as a media center. As many forum threads do, the discussion gets a bit off topic, but I found one post particularly interesting because it focuses on using a dedicated NAS from one of the major manufacturers such as Netgear, Synology or QNAP vs building your own and using a NAS software solution such as FreeNAS.

A couple of paragraphs from the post sums up the pros of using a dedicated NAS box:
The advantage of

Thecus N2560 Review

APH Networks has provided a full review (eight pages) of the Thecus N2560. This is the most comprehensive Thecus N2560 review that I have found available.

The N2560 is a 2 bay NAS from Thecus. It is quite attractive and should fit in either in a computer room or near your TV.

Performance of the NAS is good with very low power consumption.
In terms of hardware and design, it looks great in my personal opinion. Who can really argue about the Thecus N2560’s looks? While it may not be the

D-LINK ShareCenter DNS-327L Review - a Passively Cooled 2-Bay NAS

I found a D-LINK ShareCenter DNS-327L review over at Expertreviews. This D-Link 2-bay NAS is an inexpensive two bay NAS with passive cooling. Passive cooling, of course, makes this NAS nearly silent. The only sound is that of the hard drives you use in the NAS.

Performance is fine for large files, so the NAS should be ok for normal media (music and video) sharing. Performance was not so good with small files:
We fitted the DNS-327L with two 3TB WD Red hard disks and tested the

Synology DS214play Review

We found a new review of the Synology DS214play NAS on PCpro UK. The DS214play is a Synology NAS server with two bays and enough power to do media serving and full 1080p HD transcoding on the fly. What this means is that you can use the Synology NAS box to serve your TV or media player such as a Sony Playstation or a Roku running Plex Media Server (as examples). There is no need to run a separate computer to serve media files to your TV or mobile devices.

PCpro thinks the DS214play is a fast

Drobo vs Synology and QNAP

There is a discussion of the merits of the Drobo 5N NAS vs the NAS boxes from other NAS vendors such as Synology and QNAP over at the macrumors forum. The discussion kicks off with the question of whether the Drobo 5N is overkill for Time Machine backups.

As you might expect there are a variety of opinions. Some recommend Synology or QNAP because of their history of reliability. Others defend the Drobo because of its extremely easy setup. And, there is even a recommendation for the Drobo 5D
