Synology CloudStation Blog Post

A brief post was added recently on OnlineBackupReviews.org regarding using the built-in Synology CloudStation software to set up an off-site storage solution accessible by various users.

Unlike a lot of cloud storage solutions, a privately owned cloud system though something like CloudStation would be able to avoid fees based on usage and capacity, though the downside would be that whoever runs the storage would require a certain level of technical know-how that some small business owners

SmallNetBuilder has recently put out a fairly comprehensive look at the Thecus N7510, a seven bay NAS by Thecus. The review goes into quite a bit of detail on the N7510, including detailed performance tests and comparisons:
I tested the N7510 with 2.03.08.cdv firmware, using our NAS test process with RAID 0, 5 and 10 volumes. As is our standard practice, four drives were configured in each volume type.

Synology DS713+ NAS and DX213 Expansion Unit Review

Kitguru has an eleven page review of the Synology DS713+ NAS and the DX213 two drive expansion unit. The Synology DS713+ is the latest iteration of Synology's top of the line two drive NAS unit. Kitguru has a pictorial breakdown of the unit on this page. The DX213 allows for adding two extra drives to the DS713+, which expands the potential storage into the 16 TB range if using 4 TB drives. This page has some test results running the DS713+. With read results in the 120+ MB/s range and write speeds over 100 MB/s - the NAS is one of the fastest test. It is only bested in the results by two other more costly Synology NAS servers. Performance is summed up:
Overall performance is excellent, ranging close to the top of the chart. The fast 2.13ghz dual core processor can handle small data files quickly. Kitguru
Two more bits of useful information - noise and power usage indicate that the unit is quiet and power effecient:
The YS Tech fan in the DS713+ doesn’t emit much noise, even when it spins up slightly when ambient temperatures rise inside the chassis. With only two internal hard drives, the fan never has to work that hard. The unit is rather efficient, demanding only 18 watts when idle. With two drives fitted, this rises to around 32 watts under load. Kitguru
Use of the expansion unit does not slow overall performance:
The DS713+ is enhanced with the addition of one of Synology’s DX expansion units. Today we tested the DX213, and it was able to match the internal performance of the main unit while doubling the storage capacity. Kitguru
I've said before - I run three Synology NAS servers - and the reason I do is because their performance is phenomenal.

Why You Should Own an Unraid Server

There is a nice post over at PeggedIT about the pros and cons of owning an unRAID server for you NAS needs. One of the biggest pros is the parity drive protection without using striping:

Western Digital Red NAS Drives - Worth the Price Difference?

Over at Itproportal.com they ran an interesting test of 5 WD Red "NAS" drives versus the original configuration of Samsung and Seagate drives in a Synology 1812+ NAS. Over at eTechnix I found a review of the relativlely new Thecus 5-bay N5550 NAS. This is a comprehensive review (19 pages!) with many screen shots and tests. The NAS is typical of Thecus in that it is very powerful, especially when measured against cost. Thus, Thecus NAS servers usually provide very good value for your money.

This Thecus NAS is powered by an Intel Atom CPU and has USB 3.0 ports (besides have the above-mentioned 5-bays available for internal hard drives.)

WHS, of course, is the attempt by Microsoft to enter the home and small business server market with a product that was easy to use and could provide bare metal restore of client Windows machines. And, at least in the first release of WHS, the server provided drive pooling that allowed for one folder to span across multiple drives (Drive Extender) and still be protected because of behind the scenes folder

Install Windows Home Server 2011 without a DVD Drive

I found a quick post over at http://deputycio.com that runs through the steps to install Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS 2011) onto a machine that does not have a DVD drive. The method employs copying the installation files to a thumb drive. This has been around for awhile, but I thought it would be helpful if you haven't seen it.

This method is especially useful if you are installing onto a compact server such as the HP Microserver and don't want to waste one of the five hard

Low Cost NAS Boxes and Performance over Time

Servethehome.com has an interesting post about the speed differences in NAS devices over time. It seems that as the NAS drives fill up, the speed degrades:
First, the data was being written to the inner parts of the drive platters. On modern disks, it is not uncommon to see a drive go from 130MB/s or more at the outer edge to half of that at the disks inner edge. The disks in the production system were filling the last portions of the disks so the per-drive performance was probably closer to
