If you have read my earlier posts about the problems rebooting some recent Synology NAS devices, specifically, the DS1512+, DS1812+ and the DS212j (Asian shipments only), (see posts here and here), you may remember that there were hints that the problem was a hardware issue that Synology was near to tracking down.
Synology today issues a press release indicating that they had tracked the issue down to bad flash memory chips:
